About CDS

Tepandine products draw inspiration from the teppanyaki style of cooking pioneered in Japan at the beginning of the 20th Century and subsequently made popular in America and elsewhere. German engineer and industrial designer Paul Schacht III combined his love of this traditional Asian cooking style with his own patented and original design to develop an inspiring concept; that the fun and enjoyment of sharing and cooking plays an important role in all our lives, and should be celebrated and embraced.

Paul's grandfather established the family business, CDS-Design Schacht in Stendhal in Germany in 1887 and quickly built a reputation as a manufacturer of intricate horse carriages and upholstery saddles. Subsequently Paul and his father developed ground breaking innovative designs for the German automobile industry of which a number of early CDS products are still a part of the standard equipment used by Mercedes and BMW today.

In the late 1950's the company relocated to Munich where it still remains head-quartered. Paul's deep passion for cooking and his established background as an innovative design engineer led him to develop the present range of products that are now distributed across Asia under the Tepandine brand name.

Paul SchachtPaul started out by creating a prototype circular dining table; it was fashioned completely out of the highest quality German stainless steel, which was cold pressed, hand-welded, and the cooking centre used his brilliant patented technology which causes a shallow dip to form in the middle when turned on and heated up.

Suddenly here was as invention that was fun, innovative, practical and inherently sociable (an instant ice-breaker at dinner parties). That original model is still kept today in his living room at his Munich home which he cooks off and dines on with his family every single day. His vision is our innate shared passion, which is experiencing the joy of togetherness that cooking and eating can bring.

CDS Design - Schacht remains a family owned company with an established reputation for innovative design and precision engineering for over 120 years.
